Headquartered in Chicago, CME Group operates global exchanges that enable investors, producers, and businesses to trade futures and derivatives tied to interest rates, equity indexes, foreign exchange, energy, metals, and commodities. The Chicago Mercantile Exchange was founded in 1898 and went public in 2002. Since then, CME Group has expanded through industry consolidation, merging with local rival CBOT Holdings in 2007, acquiring NYMEX Holdings in 2008, and adding NEX in 2018. The company also owns a 27% stake in S&P Dow Jones Indices, making CME the exclusive marketplace for trading and clearing S&P futures contracts. Through its NEX acquisition, CME further broadened its presence in spot foreign exchange, fixed-income trading, and collateral optimization.
