General Motors Company (GM) emerged from the bankruptcy of the former General Motors Corp. in July 2009. The automaker operates through three segments—GM North America, GM International, and GM Financial—and manages eight brands globally, including four in the United States compared with eight under old GM. GM regained leadership in the U.S. auto market in 2022 after losing the top spot to Toyota in 2021 amid the chip shortage. Its U.S. market share reached 17.4% in 2025, up 60 basis points from 2024. GM also fully owns Cruise, its autonomous vehicle unit, which previously ran driverless, geofenced robotaxi services in San Francisco and other cities; following a 2023 accident, the company shifted Cruise’s focus to personal autonomous vehicles. GM Financial became GM’s captive finance arm in 2010 through the acquisition of AmeriCredit.
