ING Groep N.V. was formed in 1991 through the merger of the Dutch postal bank and NN Insurance. A series of subsequent acquisitions helped ING establish a global presence. During the 2008 financial crisis, the company required government support, which was granted on the condition that it separate its banking and insurance businesses, returning ING to a pure banking model. Today, ING holds leading banking positions in the Netherlands and Belgium, operates a range of digital banks across Europe and Australia, and maintains a global wholesale banking business primarily focused on lending.
