Sea began as the gaming company Garena and expanded into e-commerce in 2015. It now operates Shopee, Southeast Asia’s largest e-commerce platform by gross merchandise value. Shopee is a hybrid consumer-to-consumer and business-to-consumer marketplace serving Indonesia, Taiwan, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Brazil. Within Garena, Free Fire remains the primary revenue-generating game. Sea’s third business, Monee, offers lending, payments, digital banking, and insurance services. As of March 2025, founder, chair, and CEO Forrest Li held 59.1% of the voting power, while Tencent owned 18.5% of issued shares with no voting rights.
