The Southern Company is one of the largest utility providers in the United States. It serves 9 million customers through vertically integrated electric utilities in three states and natural gas distribution utilities in four states. The company owns 46 gigawatts of rate-regulated generation capacity, primarily supplying customers in Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi. Its subsidiary, Southern Power, owns 13 gigawatts of natural gas and renewable generation assets across the U.S., with electricity sold mainly under long-term contracts.
