Dogecoin is a peer-to-peer digital payment network whose technological infrastructure is a derivative of Litecoin, which itself is a fork of Bitcoin. Dogecoin was launched in 2013 as a joke, intended to mock overly serious cryptocurrencies. The DOGE mascot is inspired by a meme (an Internet joke) featuring a Shiba Inu, a Japanese dog breed that became famous.
