Dogecoin was launched in 2013 as a joke, intended to mock overly serious cryptocurrencies. The DOGE mascot is inspired by a meme (an Internet joke) featuring a Shiba Inu, a Japanese dog breed that became famous. Dogecoin quickly gained popularity, thus becoming the first "memecoin" in the cryptocurrency market.
